Cardinal essays

2020

The word "cardinal" derives from the Latin "cardinalis" — that on which something turns, a hinge. This series of visual essays explores cardinal directions, navigation, and orientation through cyanotype photographs made on the surfaces of Celtic ruins in Ireland. The deep blue of the cyanotype process merges with the ancient stone, creating images that are simultaneously maps, monuments, and records of light — questioning how we orient ourselves in both physical and conceptual spaces.
